International scientific name

Galinsoga quadriradiata Ruiz & Pav. , 1798

A hairy annual plant native to Mexico, spread across all continents. Often found in disturbed habitats.

Botanical Description

Annual herb (8) 20–62 (75) cm tall. The stem is single, branched, covered with a thick white protruding pubescence, as well as scattered glands.

The leaves are oppositely arranged, green, ovoid, with a wedge-shaped or notched base, with a coarse-toothed margin, on the petioles, covered with a protruding simple and short glandular pubescence, 2-5 (6) cm long and 1.5-4.5 cm wide.

Baskets 4-5 mm across, collected in semi-umbrellas, on unequal pubescent pedicels . The hemispherical to bell-shaped wrapper consists of broad-lanceolate pubescent leaves. Marginal false-lingual flowers are usually white, rarely pink, usually in number 5, with a tongue 0.9-2.5 × 0.9-2 mm. Tubular flowers in the amount of 15-35, yellow.

Achenes are 1.5-1.8 mm long, wedge-shaped, granular, dark gray, covered with pressed pubescence. The crest is filmy, in the marginal achenes much shorter in length, in the median ones - equal to them or even longer.

Distribution

The native land of the plant is Mexico, and the natural range also encompasses the north of South America. The plant was brought to temperate regions of North America, Eurasia and Africa, where it is widely distributed.

Taxonomy

The species was first truly described in the monograph of the Peruvian and Chilean flora of I. Ruiz and H. Pavon , published in December 1798.
