Occupation

He came from an aristocratic Cnidian clan who built his origin to Heraclides Hippot [1] [2] .

At the 50th Olympiad (580-577 BC), at the head of the Cnidian and Rhodes migrants landed in Sicily near Cape Lilibey , where he intended to establish a colony [1] . This territory was in the area of the Phoenician colonization , not far from Motia , on the lands of the Elim . It is believed that Pentatl chose this area, since there were no more free territories in the Greek colonization zone [3] , and perhaps he justified his right to this land, as later Doria , his descent from Hercules [4] , who defeated the Elim king Erica [5] .

The expedition of the Cnidians and Rhodes led to the first military conflict with the Phoenicians in Sicily. At that time, a war was going on in the west of Sicily between the inhabitants of Selinunte and the Elim of Egesta , and the Selinuntes offered Pentatle an alliance. In the battle with the Elim, to the aid of which the Phoenicians approached, the Selinunts were defeated, the Pentatla detachment suffered heavy losses, and the oikist himself died [6] .

The remaining elected their leaders Pentathle close - Gorga, Festor and Epitersida, went to the Tyrrhenian Sea and settled on the Aeolian Islands [7] . According to Pausanias , who took information from Antiochus of Syracuse , they occupied uninhabited islands, and from the rest drove the inhabitants [8] ; according to Diodorus , the local Aeolian population, reduced to 500 people, itself called the colonists to the islands [9] .

On Lipara, the Rhodes and the Cnidians founded pirate settlements, which were in constant hostility with the Etruscans [10] , and existed until the Roman conquest.
