Vettius Scaton

Vettius Scaton ( Latin: Vettius Scato ; II - I century BC) is an Italian military leader, leader of the Peligins in the Allied War .

Name Problem

Sources give different versions of the name Vettius. Appian calls him Publius [1] , Eutropius - Titus [2] , Seneca - Guy. Velley Paterkul mentions among the “most famous commanders” of the Italians Instei Cato [3] ; perhaps this is the mistake of the scribe and in fact refers to Vettius Skaton.

Participation in the Allied War

Vettius Skaton became one of the leaders of the Italic uprising against Rome (91 BC); he appears on the list of “common leaders with unlimited power over the entire allied army” [4] . Vettius managed to defeat Julius Caesar , who was in power in Samnius , and forced the Latin colony of Ezernia to surrender [5] . The army of the consul Publius Rutilia Lupa , who had been ambushed by the Liris River, suffered serious losses (the consul himself soon died of the wound received in this battle). Skaton still had to retreat due to food shortages and the actions of Gaius Maria [6] .

When Pompey Strabo besieged Titus Lafrenia in Auskul, Vettius together with Guy Vidacilius came to the aid of the besieged. Pompey was defeated at the Falernaya Mountain and driven back to the Firm, after which Vettius and Vidacilios left, apparently believing that the Roman army would not recover from defeat [7] . Nevertheless, Pompey was able to destroy the army of Vidacilius. Soon Pelpey surrendered and the peligins [8] . The sources do not report on the fate of Vettius Skaton.
