Paris Kay C. Barclay ( born Paris KC Barclay ; June 30, 1956) is an American television director and producer, as well as the president of the Directors Guild of America . He is a two-time winner of the Emmy Award and is among the busiest television directors, having shot to date about 150 episodes for such TV shows as New York Police , Ambulance , West Wing , CSI: Crime Scene , “ Lost ,” “ Shield ,” “ House Doctor ,” Law & Order , “ Detective Monk ,” “ 4isla ,” “ City Angels ,” “ Detective Rush ,” “ Sons of Anarchy ,” “The Mentalist, ” Datura , Naval Police: Los Angeles , Chorus , Smash , Good Wife , Human Race , and Manhattan .

In 2011-2014, Barkley was the executive producer and director of the Sons of Anarchy Channel’s highest-rated series FX [1] . In 2015, he was in the production of another FX project, the Executioner-Bastard .

Early life

Barkley was born in Chicago Heights in Illinois . He attended La Lumiere School, a boarding school in La Porte, Indiana. Barkley then went to Harvard College, where he was very active in musical productions and in the band singing a cappella , The Harvard Krokodiloes. During his four years there, he wrote 16 musicals, including music for the two annual Hasty Pudding shows. He went to school in La Lumiere and Harvard, along with John Roberts , who has now become the chief justice of the Supreme Court. His roommate at Harvard was Arthur Golden , author of The Memoirs of a Geisha .

Careers in film and television

1990s

Paris began his successful television career with an episode of Angel Street. He was hired by John Wells, who made his debut as an executive producer.

Barkley directed the first full-length film by Sean and Marlon Wayans “ Don’t threaten the South Central while drinking juice in your quarter ” (1996) with the participation of Keenen Ivory Wayans , Viviki A. Fox and Bernie Mack . Although the film received mixed reviews, it had a successful box office and has become a cult since its release. Barkley also directed the Cherokee film for HBO, a Western tragicomedy with Sinbad , James Coburn , Burt Reynolds , Gregory Hines and Ai Martinez in the lead roles.

After directing the episodes of Ambulance , Paris took off and, ultimately, became the producer of New York Police . Three years later, Barkley received two Emmy Awards for Best Director - the second of the episodes is called Hearts and Souls - including the death of Jimmy Smiths character, Bobby Simon. The episode was included in the "100 best episodes of all time" according to the television guide [2] . Barkley has since reunited with Smiths in the role of Nero Padilla in “ Sons of Anarchy ” [3] .

2000s

In 2000, Barkley joined forces with colleagues from The New York Police , producers Steven Bochko and Nicholas Wootton, to create The City Angels , a medical drama with a predominant African American cast, including Blair Underwood , Viola Davis , Octavia Spencer , Maya Rudolph and Vivik A. Fox . The show aired on CBS and won two NASPTS awards.

In 2002, he returned to John Wells to become the producer and director of the pilot episode, “Great Success,” with Christina Hendricks , Dylan Baker , Molly Ringwald and Christopher Lloyd in the lead roles - which ended up being aired as a two-hour movie [4 ] . In subsequent years, Barkley worked in various television dramas and comedies. He served as co-executive producer and director of Detective Rush , for which he also directed nine episodes. Other shows he shot over the decade include The West Wing , Doctor Huff, Law & Order , 4Lists , Lost , Doctor House , Shield , Datura , and Detective Monk ”,“ Good Wife ”,“ Naval Police: Los Angeles ”,“ Sons of Anarchy ”,“ CSI: Crime Scene ”,“ The Mentalist ”and 9 episodes of“ Choir ”.

The year 2008 highlighted Barkley’s return to HBO , where he is the executive producer of the three seasons of Patients, as well as the director of 36 episodes.

2010 - present time

In 2011, Barkley became Executive Producer and Principal Director of the fourth season of the FX Channel's Sons of Anarchy series.

Also in 2013, Barkley shot two episodes of Chorus , Diva [5] and Lights Out [6] . For his work on Diva, Barkley was nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Director of a comedy series [7] , his second Emmy nomination for a Chorus. At this time, Barkley filmed an episode of The New Norm and the penultimate episode of ABC 's Last Hope .

In 2014, Barkley shot the premiere and penultimate episodes of Sons of Anarchy for four consecutive years. In addition to his duties as Sons of Anarchy, Barkley also shot the landmark episode 100 for Choir, for which he received another Emmy nomination [8] , in addition to the episodes of The Good Wife and The Human Race, executive producer Steven Spielberg and starring Halle Berry , and Manhattan , the historical drama by Thomas Schlamme / Sam Shaw for WGN America .

In 2015, Paris became the executive producer / director of the next FX channel show, The Executioner-Bastard .

Personal life

Barkley has been an open gay since college [9] , and he has continuously contributed to The Advocate magazine for several years. Barkley was married to food industry administrator Christopher Barkley (nee Mason) in 2008 [10] .
