Pristina

Story

Pristina was first mentioned in sources in 892, and under the modern name in 1342. Pristina was one of the centers of the medieval Serbian state and served King Stefan Uros II Milutin (1282-1321) as a residence. The battle in the Kosovo field took place north-west of the city in 1389 . After the conquest of the Serbian capital Smederevo in 1459 by the Ottoman Empire , the rule of the Turks began.

In 1912 , during the First Balkan War , the Serbs conquered the city. During the First World War, the city ​​was annexed by Bulgaria and became the center of the Pristina district . After the war, returned to Serbia.

During World War II, Pristina was placed under Italian control. In 1943, the Germans occupied the city. After being liberated on October 21, 1944 by the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia, the city became part of the SFRY as part of the Republic of Serbia. Since 1946 it has been the administrative center of the Kosovo-Metohija Autonomous Region, since 1963 - the region. By decree of the communist government, Pristina in 1974 received the status of the capital of the freshly created socialist autonomous province of Kosovo.

In early 1999 , during the escalation of the conflict in Kosovo, the city was badly damaged. Almost all Serbs and other non-Albanians fled or were expelled from the city. From June 12, 1999 to 2003, the airport was under the control of Russian troops.

Since 2008, Pristina has been the capital of the partially recognized Republic of Kosovo .

Geography

Pristina is located in the north-eastern part of Kosovo close to the Golyak mountains. From Pristina one can see Shar Planin , which lie several kilometers away in the south of Kosovo and Metohija.

Transport

Pristina is a major hub for automobile, rail and air networks in Kosovo. Buses, trains and planes provide transport links between Pristina and other localities in the region and beyond.
