Description

Perennial rhizomatous herbaceous plants with branchless longitudinally ribbed stems (sometimes stemless), expanding under baskets. The leaves are opposite on the stem, with a fine-toothed margin, bare or covered with scattered short, hard pubescence.

Baskets are large, multi-flowered, with one-color flowers. Wrapping spherical, ovoid or oblong, multi-row, made of leathery leaflets imposing on a tiled leaf pattern: outer leaflets are short, ovoid, elliptical or narrow triangular, with membranous border; medium gradually increasing in size, oblong-ovate or elliptical, with lanceolate to almost rounded membranous or membranous appendages; internal narrowest and longest, with similar appendages. The flowers are tubular, bisexual, with a pinkish, purple or light yellow corolla with 5 linear lobes.

 
Raponticum safflower

Achenes oblong or obovate in shape, tetrahedral, with a multi - rowed tuft of awl-shaped short-feathered setae.

Range

Representatives of the genus are common in tropical regions of the Old World - from Atlantic Europe to the Pacific coast, one species is in Australia.
