It originates in a small lake near the village of Ivashkovo, Sergiev Posad district , the mouth is 3 km above the urban-type Verbilki village . The villages of Palchino, Alferievo, Sikhnevo, Frolovo, Svyatogorovo are located on Vela.
As shown by N. M. Karamzin , the chronicle river "Vlena" is the river Vela. In 1180–1181, on this river, 40 miles from Pereyaslavl, Svyatoslav met with the regiments of Vsevolod [2] .

Hydrology
The river is 62 km long (according to other sources 66 km), the catchment area is 316 km [3] . The river is of a flat type, with mainly snow feeding. Velia freezes in November - early December, opens in late March - April .

Attractions
Veli Valley is picturesque, in the upper and middle reaches whimsically meandering among the moraine hills and in some places forming real canyons. However, at present, the river is of interest only in the middle reaches, since in the lower reaches it is straightened by a channel through which at the beginning of the 20th century the forest for the porcelain factory in Verbilki was rafted, and in recent years it has been built up with large summer cottages.

The river basin - (Upper) Volga to the Kuibyshev reservoir (without the Oka basin) [3] .
