Altenburg was born on May 27, 1584 in Alach, near the city of Erfurt . His father is the blacksmith Ulrich Altenburg. In 1590 , Michael went to school, and eight years later, in 1598 , he began to study theology at the Erfurt University of Erfurt, in 1599 he received a bachelor's degree, and in 1603 - a master's degree.
Since 1600, Altenburg was engaged in teaching activities in the Erfurt School, and since 1601 he held the position of cantor in the Church of the Apostle Andrew . In 1607 , Michael became the rector of the school at the church of the Apostle Andrew. In 1609 he left teaching to become a priest, moved to the town of Trekhtelborn in the very center of Germany and served there as a pastor until 1621. However, Altenburg wrote and published his musical works, thanks to which he was compared to Orlando di Lasso , a Flemish composer who lived in Bavaria . Apparently, Altenburg managed to create a powerful and skillful choir in Trekhtelborn for which he wrote most of his vocal works.
After 1621, Altenburg moved to the city of Zemmerda , also in Thuringia , and became a priest in the church of St. Boniface (Bonifaciuskirche). He continued to publish his compositions and was a respected composer and preacher, but, the horrors of the Thirty Years War nullified all his efforts and undermined his faith in the power of art. The family of the composer suffered from the excesses of the military. In 1636 , the plague broke out, many of the parishioners of his church died, as well as his wife Katerina and ten of the thirteen children. In order to save the survivors from the war, Altenburg returned to Erfurt in 1637 , where he served as a deacon for some time, and from 1638 he became a pastor again in the church of the Apostle Andrew. Michael Altenburg died on February 12, 1640.
Most of Michael Altenburg’s musical works were vocal concerts, motets and chorals.
