Endemic of New Zealand . It inhabits forest edges, glades, roadsides, meadows, riverbanks, etc. It is often observed in anthropogenic biotopes.
Two subspecies are distinguished: Vanessa gonerilla gonerilla (Fabricius, 1775) and Vanessa gonerilla ida (Alfken, 1899). The latter lives on Chatham Island .
Wingspan 50-60 mm. Sexual dimorphism is not expressed. The central cell on the hind wings is closed. The outer wing paradise is wavy with one more prominent protrusion on the vein M1 on the front wings. The outer edge of the hind wings without noticeable protrusions. Wings below with a series of submarginal ocular spots.
