Background
For the first time, Giorgio Moroder mentioned collaborating with Daft Punk in May 2012. He said he recorded a soliloquy of his life for their upcoming album [2] . The idea of Daft Punk was to record a lengthy interview with him, and then use clippings from it for a documentary song [3] . The song was supposed to serve as a metaphor for freedom in music, Moroder’s monologue, according to the creators, was an analogue of the history of music, regardless of tastes and genres [4] . The musicians had previously contacted Moroder, hoping to collaborate with him in working on the soundtrack for the film " Tron: Heritage ", but the plans were not realized [5] .
Moroder explained that he was not involved in writing music or recording sound: “They did not allow me to intervene at all. Toma asked if I want to tell the story of my life. After that, they already knew what to do ” [6] . Later he said that he did not even know how the recorded material of his speech would be used, not excluding the possibility of turning it into rap [7] . Daft Punk built the composition on the basis of a demo made several years earlier, because it seemed to them that Morodera's style was felt in that recording [8] . Later, after hearing the final version of the song, Giorgio Moroder realized that it was inspired by his work, in particular the song “ I Feel Love ” recorded with Donna Summer [6] .
Production
Peter Franco , one of the engineers who worked on Random Access Memories , said that Daft Punk wanted to do test recordings at in Los Angeles . According to him, the arpeggio that can be heard on the track was recorded just at these preliminary sessions - “the arpeggio was played in layers on different MIDI synthesizers, creating this great sound.” Franco described these sessions as very funny and was pleasantly surprised that some materials were in the final product [9] .
When Moroder arrived at the studio to record his soliloquy, he was surprised to find three microphones for voice recording instead of one; he first decided that it was reinsurance in case one of the microphones failed. However, the recording engineer explained that the first microphone was from the 1960s , the second from the 1970s , and the third was modern; all of them will be used for recording in order to reproduce different periods from the life of Moroder [2] . To the question of Giorgio, who can notice the differences in sound, he answered "no one but Tom " [10] . The recording of the voice, which took two days, was also attended by guitarist Niall Rogers who participated in the work on the album [2] [3] .
Moroder did not know anything about working on the song until six months before the release of the album, he was in Paris in the same studio as Daft Punk. One of the engineers told him that work on “Giorgio by Moroder” is progressing well, but he can’t say anything else [6] . Moroder later suggested that the duo could have been more accurate when they interviewed him, as it seemed to him that he had made several grammatical errors. He also noted that if he ever decides to write an autobiography , he will take as a basis the notes made for Daft Punk [7] . The deluxe version of Random Access Memories includes a 10- inch vinyl record with an extended version of Moroder’s interview [11] .
Like the other tracks on the album, Giorgio by Moroder primarily used studio musicians to record parts. Daft Punk conveyed their ideas to musicians using the score , although in some cases the tunes simply whistled [12] . Bangalter cited the example that he completely whistled for Omar Hakim his drum and bass part, and he reproduced it entirely for Giorgio by Moroder [13] . As the duo sought to avoid using samples from common libraries, they recorded new ones with the help of professional noise loops from Warner Bros. They reproduced the sounds of a crowded restaurant, placing microphones next to a group of people using forks [14] .
Composition
The song was written in a-minor , at a rate of 4/4 and at a pace of 112 beats per minute [15] . Zach Baron from “ GQ ” described the track as “Moroder hesitantly talks about his youth in German clubs under the knock of a metronome ” [16] . The Mixmag reviewer noted how the narrator’s speech matches the changes in the accompaniment to create a dramatic effect: “when Moroder says he needed a click, the metronome track begins the main line of the drums” [17] . In another review, it was noted that “after he says that everyone calls him Giorgio, the track turns into an arpeggiated synthesizer dream” [18] . Q magazine drew attention to changes in the composition from “ electro to a clean disco , to a beautiful orchestration, to a storm of electronic percussion” and its transformation into a traditional house at the end [19] . NME Matthew Horton noted that at the end of the song, the remaining bass part amusingly ends in nothing [20] . Some also noted the similarity in the structure of “Giorgio by Moroder” with the song “ ” by [21] and “The Chase” by Moroder himself [22] .
