John Davis Lodge ( born John Davis Lodge ; October 20, 1903 - October 29, 1985 ) is an American actor , later a politician. 79th Governor of Connecticut (1951-1955), US Ambassador to Spain , Argentina and Switzerland .

Early years
John Lodge was born in Washington , DC. His father was the poet George Cabot Lodge, through whom he was the grandson of Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, great-great-grandson of Senator Elijah H. Mills and great-great-grandson of Senator George Cabot. On the mother's side - Matilda Elizabeth Davis Fillinghizen - Lodge was the great-great-grandson of Senator John Davis. He had a brother Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. (who also became a politician) and the sister of Baroness Elena Lodge de Stril [5] [6] .
In 1925, John Lodge graduated from Harvard College , where he was a member of the Fox Club. In 1929, he graduated from the law department of Harvard University . In 1932, he passed the legal exam in New York and then began law practice there.
Career
Acting career
In the 1930s, after a short career as a lawyer, Lodge became a film and theater actor and starred in several notable theater productions and Hollywood films.
His acting career lasted from 1933 to 1942. He starred in films such as Little Women and Little Colonel (in which he played the father of the heroine Shirley Temple ). He was a partner of Marlene Dietrich in the movie "The Slutty Empress ." The lodge has appeared in several films produced in France and the UK . In 1937, he played the role of Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond in the English film "Bulldog Drummond in the Gulf." Fluent in French, he starred in the films of Maurice Turner Koenigsmark (1935) and Max Ofühls "From Meyerling to Sarajevo" (1940), in which he played the role of Archduke Franz Ferdinand . In 1941, after returning to the United States, he appeared in several Broadway productions, including in Lilian Hellman 's The Guardians on the Rhine.
Military career
The lodge served in the U.S. Navy with the rank of lieutenant and lieutenant commander from August 1942 to January 1946. He was a liaison officer between the French and American fleets. He was awarded the Legion of Honor and the Military Cross , which was awarded to him by Charles de Gaulle . After the war, he was engaged in research work in the field of economics. He left the US Navy in 1966 with the rank of captain of the 1st rank .
Political career
In the years 1947-1951, Lodge was a member of the US Congress of the Connecticut Republican Party . From 1951 to 1955, he served as Governor of Connecticut. In 1952 and 1960, he was a delegate from Connecticut to the National Congress of the Republican Party.
From January 1955 to January 1961, the Lodge served as the US Ambassador to Spain . In 1963-1964 he was president of the nonprofit organization Junior Achievement, Inc. In 1964, he made an unsuccessful attempt to run for US Senator from Connecticut. In 1964-1969, he chaired a committee at the University of Pennsylvania Foreign Policy Research Institute. From 1969 to 1974 he was the US Ambassador to Argentina , and in 1983 - in Switzerland .
Personal life
On July 6, 1929, Lodge married actress and ballerina Francesca Bragiotti , with whom he starred in the 1938 film Today At Eleven. The couple had two daughters Lily and Beatrice. For many years he lived in the city of Westport (Connecticut) .
The Lodge died on October 29, 1985 in New York , and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. [7]
