History
The foundation of the wooden church of Cosmas and Damian dates back to the reign of Ivan the Terrible . The church suffered from fires several times, so a new stone building was built in 1656 at the expense of the residents of Kadasheva Sloboda . The temple was five-domed, with kokoshniks and half-columns. The main throne was consecrated in honor of the Nativity of the Virgin , and the side chapels - in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and Cosmas and Damian. After some time, a baroque bell tower and a refectory were built near the church. A particle of the relics of Cosmas and Damian, the patrons of the students, was stored in the temple. [one]
Due to the fact that the temple was located in a prosperous rich settlement, it became more and more beautiful. At the end of the XVII century. the famous five-tier gilded iconostasis was installed in the temple, the icons for which were created by the artists of the Armory . [one]
In 1722 , the chapel of St. Sergius of Radonezh was added to the church. In 1782 , the aisle of Cosmas and Damian was transferred to the extended refectory. In 1801 , christening of the future friend of Pushkin , P.V. Nashchokin, took place in this church. [one]
During the war with Napoleon, the temple was badly damaged by the French army. Soldiers used the church as a stable. The temple was restored at the expense of philanthropists. [one]
