Biography
Born in 1859 near Hong Kong , in the sea on a ship, where his father served as an officer of the American Navy.
Upon his father's return to the United States, he grew up in Newton , Massachusetts , where he studied at The Governor's Academy , then in St. Mark's School [1] (in 1877). He later studied painting at the Royal Academy of Munich . In 1882, John returned to Boston , USA . He spent part of his artistic career in New England .
In 1886, John Breck traveled to Europe again to study at the Julian Academy in Paris . He studied under Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre . Here I met with some artists from the USA, who also studied in Europe. In 1887, Breck, along with other American artists - Willard Metcalf and Theodore Robinson , traveled to Giverny , France , where the master of impressionists, Claude Monet , lived and worked with, John made friends with, studied his technique and adopted impressionism . In 1888 and 1889, exhibited at the Salon . After breaking with his stepdaughter Monet - Blanche , he returned to the United States in 1890, where he worked in the style of impressionism in his own studio in Newton [2] .
He died in 1899 in Boston, and was buried in the Forest Hills Cemetery city cemetery .
The artist's works are in several American museums and private collections. An existing fund named after him supports students at St. Marks School .
