The monument dedicated to Russian - Georgian friendship was inaugurated in 1983 on the day of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of St. George - the treaty of patronage and supreme power of the Russian Empire with the united Georgian kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti (aka Kartli-Kakheti kingdom, Eastern Georgia) about Georgia’s transition under the protectorate of Russia [1] . The composition is set on Tishinskaya Square - the place where until the XIX century the Georgian settlement was located [1] .
The monument “Friendship Forever” is the first work by Zurab Tsereteli in Moscow, created together with architects Andrei Voznesensky and Yu. Konovalov [2] .
The monument, in addition to the main one, also has unofficial names: “Tongue Tree”, “Champaign” or “Shish Kebab” (due to external resemblance) [1] , as well as the nickname “Member of Ascension” given by the Georgians (the Moscow name of the Georgian settlement) soon after its construction.
Interestingly, the composition was once “paired”: the second part, called the “Ties of Friendship”, was installed at the exit of the 208-kilometer Georgian Military Highway . The monument consisted of two rings - the history of Russia and Georgia, connected by a huge metal knot with gilding. Inside was a metal scroll with the text of the St. George Treatise. This unusual form of composition by Zurab Tsereteli was inspired by the love of Alexander Sergeyevich Griboedov and Nina Alexandrovna Chavchavadze . In 1991, the monument “Ties of Friendship” was blown up by order of the first president of Georgia Zviad Konstantinovich Gamsakhurdia [3] .

The 42-meter monument "Friendship Forever" is a column consisting of hard to distinguish letters of the Russian and Georgian alphabets strung on a vertical frame, which form the words "Peace", "Labor", "Unity", "Brotherhood" [2] . The column is crowned with a wreath in the form of a bunch of grapes intertwined with ears of wheat , which is very symbolic - grapes symbolize Georgia, and bread - Russia [2] .
A monument was erected on a wide flat pedestal with copper scrolls, on one of which words from the St. George Treatise are inscribed, and on the others are quotes from the works of many authors on friendship between Russia and Georgia: S. Rustaveli, I. Chavchavadze, A. Tsereteli, N Nikoladze, A. S. Pushkin, M. Yu. Lermontov, S. A. Yesenin, B. L. Pasternak, K. S. Simonov and others [2] . It is noteworthy that a spelling error was made in the text of one of the scrolls [1] .
15 cartouches were installed a few days before the unveiling of the monument, but the scroll with the lines of Boris Leonidovich Pasternak was welded only before the arrival of government cars on the square, because one of the secretaries of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union forbade placing poems of Pasternak on copper sheets [3] . But Tsereteli had a different view of what was happening:
| Just to quote the forbidden Pasternak in Soviet times meant risking a biography. But in my column-monument of the so-called linguistic friendship (on Tishinskaya Square, not far from Belorussky Train Station) - with scripts of letters from the Aramaic, Georgian, Slavic alphabets - Pasternak's poetic lines are cast in metal. Then - in the heyday of stagnation! - this name was not mentioned, and Mikhail Suslov personally deleted the lines of Boris Leonidovich. Remember that one? Scary man! He was responsible for the ideology in the CPSU Central Committee, and it was dangerous to argue with him. But I really wanted the people to read the beautiful poems of Pasternak, and I showed my own will: I prepared the plate with poetic lines cast on it in advance and waited. When I was informed that the commission, which was supposed to accept the monument, had left the Kremlin, I gave the command to weld the stove. |
