Biography
Princess Maria Anna Josefa was born in Regensburg on December 30, 1654. She was the daughter of Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor from the House of Habsburg from his third wife, Princess Eleanor Gonzaga.
In Wiener Neustadt on October 25, 1678, Princess Maria Anna Joseph was married to Johann Wilhelm, Elector Prince of Palatinate. He was the brother of Empress Eleanor Magdalene, the third wife of Emperor Leopold I, half-brother of Maria Anna.
The wedding ceremony was held by Archbishop Leopold Karl von Kollonich. In memory of this event, as well as of the previous wedding of Archduke Eleanor, the sister of Maria Anna, a Marian column was erected on the main square of Wiener Neustadt.
After the wedding, the Elector Prince and Princess settled in Dusseldorf, where they lived in conditions befitting their origin. Philip Wilhelm, Elector of Pfalsky, father-in-law of Maria Anna, in 1679 ceded to them the Duchies of Julich and Berg.
Married to Johann Wilhelm, Maria Anna gave birth to two children who died immediately after birth:
- Prince of Palatinate (genus and d. 6.02.1683);
- Prince of Palatinate (genus and d. 5.02.1686).
Maria Anna Josefa died of tuberculosis during a visit to the imperial court in Vienna. She was buried in the Imperial Crypt.
