General magnetic survey is a systematic measurement of the angular and strength elements of terrestrial magnetism . In the 90s of the XIX century, magnetologists of European countries agreed to start land magnetic surveys, later called "general magnetic surveys".

Magnetic surveys in the world
In France, measurements were taken from 1882-1885 with a step of 20-30 kilometers. In England, measurements were taken from 1889-1892 with a step of 30-40 kilometers, in Germany from 1893-1896. Record in detail general magnetic survey was in Holland from 1890-1892, with an observation density of 1 point per 100 square meters. The first general magnetic surveys in the Southern Hemisphere appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1901, systematic magnetic measurements began in British India , Dutch India .
Magnetic surveys in Russia and the USSR
In Russia, the general magnetic survey project was developed in 1893 and provided for the measurement of the angular and strength elements of terrestrial magnetism at 2700 points (1 point per 2000 square kilometers). For a number of reasons, the shooting was carried out only in the Kherson and Tauride provinces (200 points). Implementation of the project resumed in 1910. Over the next seven years, observations were made in St. Petersburg , Novgorod , Pskov and Podolsk provinces (664 points in increments of 20 kilometers). Route surveys were conducted along the shores of the North European and Siberian rivers. In 1925, at the first geophysical congress in Moscow , a resolution was adopted on the continuation of general magnetic surveys throughout the country. The operational management of the work was assigned to the General Magnetic Survey Bureau, which was headed by magnetologist Nikolai Vladimirovich Roze. In 1930, M.E. Ostrekin took part in the filming . By 1940 , the number of expeditions reached 357 and the number of observation points was up to 21690. Systematic observations covered all regions of the USSR , including Transcaucasia , Central Asia , Kazakhstan , and the Far East .
