Biography

It comes from the famous Lithuanian magnate family of the Khodkevichs . The second son of the governor of Novogrudok, Alexander Ivanovich Khodkevich (c. 1475 - 1549 ) and Princess Vasilisa Yaroslavna Golovchinsky . From the middle of the 16th century, he held high positions of the governor of Vitebsk (from 1554 ), the Trokansky chestnut (from 1559 ), the Lithuanian hetman (from 1561 ), the Vilnensky chestnut (from 1564 ), and the great Lithuanian hetman (from 1566 ). He was a supporter of the independence of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and an opponent of the Union of Lublin . Protesting against the federal association with Poland in the Commonwealth , in 1569 he abandoned all state and administrative posts [1] . He participated in the Livonian war .

In 1568, he founded a printing house at an Orthodox monastery in the town of Zabludovo, Grodno County (now the Bialystok county of Podlaskie Voivodeship in Poland , where Moscow’s first printers Ivan Fedorov and Peter Mstislavets , who fled from persecution from Moscow , continued their work, they printed the “ Gospel ” in Zabludovo a collection of conversations and teachings with the interpretation of the Gospel texts (44 copies were preserved), with the coat of arms of Grigory Khodkevich on the back of the title page Ivan F, who left for Vilna , already without Ivan Yedorov printed in the Zabludov printing house “Psalter with the Chasoslovist” (4 copies were preserved). The pressure of the Catholic clergy forced Grigory Khodkevich in 1570 to abandon support for Cyrillic Orthodox printing.

Grigory Khodkevich was married to Princess Ekaterina Ivanovna Vishnevetskaya (d. C. 1580 ), daughter of Prince Ivan Mikhailovich Vishnevetsky (c. 1490 - 1542 ), holder of the Cherkasy and Propoisky , and Anastasia Semenovna Olizarovich.
