Biography

Lino Ventura was born in the north of Italy in Parma to the family of Giovanni Ventura and Louise Borrini. At the age of 8 he dropped out of school and changed many professions.

In 1942, he married a childhood friend Odette Leconte, the couple had four children: Milen (1946), Lawrence (1950), Linda (1958) and Clelia (1961).

At the same time professionally engaged in boxing and wrestling. In 1950, Lino became the champion of Europe [ clarified ] in middleweight in Greco-Roman wrestling , however, having received a serious injury to his right leg during the fight with Henri Kogan (who was also an actor), he was forced to interrupt his sportsman’s career.

In 1953 he entered the world of cinema, starring in the gangster film " Do not touch the booty " by Jacques Becker . From this moment began the acting career of Lino Ventura. Mostly, he starred in gangster films, often with his friend Jean Gabin . Critic V. Dyomin, citing his most characteristic roles of this period, wrote: “Embodiment of cruelty (“ Do not touch prey ”, 1953) or deceit (“ Raid on thieves ”, 1954), the personification of the evil will ( Street Law , 1956, Immediate action ", 1956," It remains to live for three days ", 1957), he even in" Lift to the scaffold "(1957) or in" Montparnasse, 19 ", where he didn’t have to depict completely gangsters, it is still a villain, as if authorized representative of the terrible, inhuman forces remaining for the time being behind the scenes ... " [4] .

Also among the most famous roles of Ventura are, for example, the role of corrupt policeman Tiger Brown in the film “Threepenny Opera” (1963) and the mafioso Vito Genovese in the movie “ Papers of Valachi ” (1972).

Despite the fact that he spent most of his life in France and spoke Italian with a French accent , he did not receive French citizenship.

In 1966, Lino Ventura founded the “Snowdrop” charity foundation for helping people with disabilities.

The actor died of a heart attack in 1987 at the age of 68.

In Paris , the square at the intersection of Martyr and Avenue Trudean was named after him [5] .
