Carpentry settlement

Carpentry settlement - one of the Moscow settlements . It existed in the XVII - XVIII centuries. [1] .

According to legend, for the restoration of Moscow after the Time of Troubles, Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich gathered carpenters from different Russian cities and settled them on the Arbat , in the newly created Carpentry settlement. Its center was the temple of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, "what's in the Carpenters . " The first mention of it dates back to 1625 . At the end of the 17th century, it was rebuilt in stone. According to the preserved documents, in 1632 there were 58 houses in the settlement [1] .

The profession of carpenters was quite in demand in Moscow. This was facilitated both by the need to rebuild the city after fires, and the fact that Muscovites overwhelmingly lived in wooden houses and regularly needed carpentry services. As a rule, metropolitan carpenters worked to order. In this case, the king and the boyars, if necessary, in large-scale construction work, did not prefer to turn to the craftsmen from the Carpentry settlement, but to the Pomors, whose services were much cheaper [1] .

According to 1638, 124 carpenters worked in Moscow [2] .
