Marietta Frangopulo was born in Yeysk, in a family of immigrants from Greece. In childhood, she studied in Astrakhan, in the Shaverdovo gymnasium [1] , then moved to Petrograd, where she entered the theater school . She graduated in 1919 in the class of Leonid Leontyev , after which she was accepted into the ballet troupe of the State Opera and Ballet Theater (formerly Mariinsky ). In 1922, she joined the Young Ballet experimental group, in which she participated in the choreographic experiments of the beginning choreographer Georgy Balanchivadze . She was among the artists who participated in the premiere of the dance symphony by Fedor Lopukhov " The Greatness of the Universe " (1923). In those same years, she posed for the artist Zinaida Serebryakova , who created a pastel portrait of a ballerina in a costume for the ballet Carnival . She danced on stage until 1947.
Marietta began to collect her collection on the history of St. Petersburg ballet, which began with pre-revolutionary photographs of graduates of the Imperial Theater School and a lifetime portrait of choreographer Charles Didlo , when she was young. Since 1940, she taught the history of ballet at the Leningrad Choreographic School, later she initiated the creation of a school museum - it was officially organized in 1957, Marietta Kharlampievna became its first director, and remained the director of the museum until her death in 1979. The museum collection includes book rarities, paintings, posters, photographs, theater costumes, ballet shoes and other exhibits related to the history of St. Petersburg ballet. By 2005, the collection totaled more than 15 thousand exhibits [2] .
