Biography

Egil Shobu was born on November 25, 1945 in the Tonsberg municipality of Westfall . He began to actively engage in rowing from early childhood, was trained at the local Tönsberg canoe club of the same name.

He achieved his first serious success at the adult international level in 1966, when he joined the main team of the Norwegian national team and attended the World Championships in East Berlin, from where he brought the silver dignity award, won in the classification of double kayaks at a distance of 10,000 meters. A year later, at the European Championships in German Duisburg, he received a bronze medal in singles over ten kilometers. Thanks to a series of successful performances, he won the right to defend the country's honor at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City - as part of a four-seater crew, which also included rowers Steinar Amundsen , Toure Berger and Jan Johansen , ahead of all his rivals at a distance of 1000 meters and thereby won the Olympic gold medal.

In 1969, at the European Championship in Moscow, Shobu won a silver medal in doubles at ten kilometers. The following season, he attended the World Cup in Copenhagen, from where he returned with a golden dignity award won in four kayaks ten kilometers away. A year later, at similar competitions in Yugoslav Belgrade in silver at ten thousand meters he won silver. Being one of the leaders of the Norwegian rowing team, he successfully qualified for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich - in four with the same partners as four years ago, this time he received bronze - in the decisive race, the crews from the USSR and Romania passed him. Soon after the end of these competitions, he decided to end his career as a professional athlete, giving way to young Norwegian rowers in the national team.

In addition to playing sports in the period 1966-1985, Egil Shobu served in the police, then in 1985-1994 he worked as a teacher in college.
