Biography
Born March 12, 1770 in Dijon, France, in the family of Benigne Charles Fevret and Victoire Marie de Motmans .
He received his initial education at the École Militaire military school ( Paris , France ), which he graduated in 1785. In 1788, Saint-Mement served in the French Guard. [2] During the French Revolution , he fled to the United States through Switzerland, settling in New York in 1793. Then, together with their mother creole, they traveled to Santo Domingo to return their lands. Faced with difficulties, they were engaged in growing vegetables. Because of need, Charles began to paint portraits.
Returning to the United States, he lived here from 1793 to 1814. During this time, he created numerous portraits, often using the style (technique) of the physionotrace for them, invented in 1786 by the French musician Gilles-Louis Chrétien ( fr. Gilles-Louis Chrétien ).
Interestingly, the portrait of George Washington of his work was depicted on a US postage stamp dedicated to the 200th anniversary of this president.
Returning to France, Saint-Memen worked as the director of the Museum of Fine Arts of Dijon ( Fr. Musée des beaux-arts de Dijon ) from 1817 until the end of his life.
He died on June 23, 1852 in Dijon.
