Biography

Born in the family of a priest. In 1858 he graduated from the Main Pedagogical Institute with the title of senior teacher and with the obligation to serve eight years in the Ministry of Education. He was appointed teacher of the Russian language and literature at the Ponevezh gymnasium, where he served only a year and retired due to illness.

In 1861, he took up the post of tutor in history in St. Petersburg in the 2nd Cadet Corps ; here he remained for three years, and in 1867 he was approved as a teacher.

In 1869, he again joined the Ministry of Education as a teacher of history at the 6th St. Petersburg Gymnasium , while at the same time he taught at the Naval School and at the Pavlovsky Women's Institute .

In 1875, he was appointed Director of Public Schools in the St. Petersburg Province and a member of the St. Petersburg Standing Commission for conducting public readings. Under him, the district schools were transformed into urban ones, on his initiative and under his direct supervision, annual teacher congresses were organized, at which pedagogical exhibitions were organized. Rozhdestvensky organized a library and a study room at the School Directorate, which all teachers could use. At the same time, he established permanent teacher meetings.

In 1879 he was promoted to acting state councilor .

S. E. Rozhdestvensky compiled a number of history textbooks for schools and colleges.

In 1890 he retired due to illness. At the Novoladozh City School, a scholarship was established on his behalf.

He died on September 11 ( 23 ), 1891 and was buried in the cemetery of the Voskresensky Novodevichy Convent .
