Story

Memories

Sawyer went to jail for a scam with Cassidy. Returning by order of the guards from the gym where he was engaged in boxing , Sawyer saw a group of prisoners beating a man. He was told that this prisoner was named Munson. He was jailed because he stole 10 million dollars owned by the state. The state wants them back. The head of the prison makes a deal with Sawyer: he must find out where the money is and he will be released ahead of schedule. Sawyer quickly gained Manson’s confidence by warning that the warden was about to appropriate the money by pressure on his wife.

When Cassidy came to see Sawyer, she showed him a photograph of a baby girl. It turned out that Cassidy gave birth to a daughter from him, whom she named Clementine. In response, Sawyer stated that Cassidy mistook him for the wrong person, and he does not want to know about any daughter. Munson then told Sawyer about the whereabouts of 10 million, and he, according to the agreement, passed this information to the head of the prison. For this he was reduced the term. When Sawyer was asked what account he should transfer the fees due to him, he asked them to be put in a bank in Albuquerque in the name of Clementine Phillips.

Events

In a conversation with Jack, Juliet tried to assure him that the Others take all decisions together, and not at the behest of Ben . However, when Ben suddenly appeared and ordered Juliet to follow him, Jack realized the inconsistency of her words. Ben told Juliet that they hijacked the yacht, but Song wounded Colin. Meanwhile, Danny Picket came to pick up Sawyer and Kate for work. Sawyer tried to provoke his jailer into a fight, but he was suddenly informed by radio that a certain incident had happened. Then the captives saw a bloodied Colin carried on a stretcher. Realizing that one of the survivors shot her, Sawyer decided to arrange an escape. With the help of a lever, he let water into the cage and came up with a plan: to grab one of the Others when they come for him and hit him with a discharge of electric current , which was brought to the button. Sawyer was already shocked, so he expected, unlike an unprepared enemy, to withstand the blow. Then Ben came to the cells. He asked how old Sawyer was (he replied that he was 32, but then admitted that he was actually three years older) and how much he weighs. When Ben stepped into a puddle, Sawyer grabbed his hand and began to press the button, but Ben told me that he had cut off the electricity . So the prisoners learned that they are being monitored. Then Ben brutally beat Sawyer, and he lost consciousness.

Sawyer woke up lying on the table. He heard Tom and Ben talk about how, after the sky turned purple, the connection stopped working. Then, a stick was inserted between his teeth - “from pain,” as Ben explained — and a shot was given. Jack, sitting in the cell, heard the cries of a comrade on an allegedly broken intercom. Then Tom showed Sawyer a cage with a rabbit (the number 8 was drawn on his back) and began to shake it. The rabbit fluttered around the cage for a minute and fell silent. Ben explained that the same injection was given to the rabbit. According to him, it affects the body in such a way that when the heartbeat accelerates, a heart break occurs. Ben put a watch on Sawyer’s wrist that showed the number of heartbeats per minute. They should have given a signal when the pulse reaches 125 points. In addition, Ben threatened to give Kate the same injection in the event that Sawyer tells about what happened to him. Others took Sawyer back to the cage and gave Kate more suitable work clothes. When she began to dress in front of Sawyer, he could not look away. The clock began to beep, signaling that his pulse was quickening. To calm down, Sawyer poured cold water and irritably refused to explain his behavior. Meanwhile, while Jack intercomd listening to the Others' conversations, Juliet burst into his cell. Her clothes were bloody. She asked the doctor to help save Colin's life. On the way to the operating room, he (with a bag thrown over his head) was led past the cells where the remaining prisoners were kept. Sawyer and Kate desperately shouted after Jack, apparently deciding that their comrade was being executed. In a medical unit, Jack caught a glimpse of X- rays hanging on a wall. While he was trying to save the wounded along with Juliet, Ben, Tom and Denny watched their actions. Jack found out that Juliet was a doctor, but a doctor on infertility issues, and she knew little about operations. Jack sutured the hepatic artery, but suddenly Colin had a cardiac arrest. Jack needed a defibrillator , but Juliet did not have it, so Colin, despite trying to reanimate her, died. From grief, Picket became furious. He rushed to the cages and began to beat Sawyer, who, remembering the injection, did not resist. Throwing him to the bars of the grate and continuing to strike, Picket asked Kate if she loved Sawyer. Kate, sobbing and begging to stop beating, said yes. Then Picket left.

In the survivors' camp, Desmond decided to fix the roof of Claire’s tent and suggested she temporarily move from the beach. She refused, believing that the roof was all right. She was supported by Charlie , who said he would fix the problems himself if necessary. Desmond had to back down. Nevertheless, he took a golf club from Paulo and built a lightning rod near Claire’s home. When asked by Hurley if this is not an object of art, he replied that he was conducting an experiment. After a while, a thunderstorm began. Claire's roof broke down in gusts of wind, and rain fell inward. Charlie, looking suspiciously at Desmond, helped Claire wipe Aaron. Then lightning struck and hit right in the lightning rod. Desmond once again realized that he could see the future.

Meanwhile, Ben handcuffed Jack to the table where Colin was lying, and left. Hearing from Jack that Colin was doomed in any case, Juliet asked if he was trying to calm her down. Jack objected that he didn't give a damn about her calm. While Juliet unfastened the handcuffs, he asked what kind of x-rays, which depict a large tumor in the spine of a man aged about forty years. As a neurosurgeon, Jack understood why the others had captured him and asked who he had to save. Kate managed to squeeze through the ceiling bars and get out. She began to persuade Sawyer to run, and when he refused, she tried to break the lock of his cell. Sawyer asked her to escape alone - in the name of her feelings for him - but Kate replied that she confessed her love only so that Picket would stop beating him. When Kate climbed back into the cage, Sawyer shouted after her - "every man for himself."

After some time, Ben suggested that Sawyer take a walk. Remembering the episode with the rabbit, Sawyer joked that he probably liked Steinbeck's book On Mice and People. As they climbed the mountain, Sawyer’s clock was beeping again, and he wondered if Ben had suggested taking a walk to kill him. To this, Ben replied that he had not been given any vaccine to stimulate his heartbeat, and his watch only measures his pulse. Moreover, it turned out that the rabbit was just injected with sleeping pills , and he is alive. In support of his words, Ben took out a rabbit with an eight on its back from a bag. Sawyer suspected that he was presented with another animal, but Ben replied that this was not the purpose of their walk. Climbing to the top of the hill, Sawyer was amazed to see an island in the distance - the same one where, according to Ben, the plane crash occurred. So Sawyer realized that they were taken to another island, and the escape routes were cut off. When asked why it was necessary to arrange a performance with an injection, Ben replied that the confidence of a con man can be won only by deceiving him. In addition, Ben hinted that he had guessed about his feelings for Kate, although Sawyer was playing indifference. He said that it is necessary that someone else be nearby, otherwise "the person becomes lonely and he becomes ill." When Sawyer asked what he had in mind, Ben replied that it was a quote from Mice and Men.

Interesting Facts

  • In this series, Sawyer calls Pickett the nickname "Chinatown." This is a hint at Roman Polanski 's film Chinatown ( 1974 ), where Jack Nicholson’s character had his nose broken in exactly the same way as Picket [1] .
  • One of the Others injects Sawyer with a syringe with a large needle - “into the sternum, like in a movie”. This is an allusion to the film “ Pulp Fiction ”, where the heroine Uma Thurman was brought to life in the same way [1] .
  • The title of the series is a quote from Jack’s speech in the “ White Rabbit ” (“The formula 'every man for himself' will not work. If we don’t live together, we will die separately.”) The same phrases are repeated in the conversation of the captives: to Sawyer’s words that “now everyone is his own person”, Kate answers - “we live together, we die alone” [1] .
  • A rabbit with a figure-eight on its back, which is shown to Sawyer, is a reference to Stephen King 's book How to Write Books . In it, King, to prove his idea that the writer's craft is a kind of telepathy , describes a white rabbit sitting in a cage with an eight drawn on its back. After which he concludes that although he and the reader not only did not move their lips, but were also spaced in space and time, nevertheless, the reader imagined exactly what the writer wanted to tell.
  • The episode was watched by 17.087 million people in the United States [2] .
