Vadim Vyacheslavovich Smolensky (born December 4, 1966 ) is a Russian writer and translator.

Best known for his book, Notes of Gaijin, and as a translator, Haruki Murakami .
Graduated from St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University . He lived in Japan for nine years (1993-2002). Since 2006, lives in Liverpool (England).

Compositions
- Gaijin Notes is a lyrical epic about a foreigner in the Japanese islands. The book consists of 16 short stories and 12 short philosophical and journalistic essays. Each essay accompanies the corresponding story and represents its peculiar semantic result. The stories are devoted to various aspects of the life of a foreigner (mainly Russian, but not only) in Japan, and features of intercultural communication; all of them are filled with humor, an original philosophical outlook on modern man and culture, as well as adventurous stories that demonstrate the peculiar idea of “gaijinism” - a sense of culture as a journey, the beauty of loneliness and homelessness, the modern man’s doom to emigrate, even in his own country, due to interpenetration cultures and the inability to identify with one or another of them, including native.
- The book "Notes of gaijin" was published twice by the publishers of Helikon Plus (2005) and Amphora (2007).
