The Central Asian economic region - one of the 19 economic regions of the USSR , consisted of four Central Asian republics:
- Kyrgyz SSR (now - Kyrgyzstan )
- Tajik SSR (now - Tajikistan )
- Turkmen SSR (now - Turkmenistan )
- Uzbek SSR (now - Uzbekistan )
Population - 31 337 thousand people. ( 1987 ).
The main areas of specialization are those using local resources: gas production , non-ferrous metallurgy , chemical , light and food industries .
Agriculture: the main cotton and silk-growing base of the country. Sheep breeding .
