Madrid Pact ( English Pact of Madrid , Spanish Pacto de Madrid ), also known as the Madrid Agreements of 1953 ( Spanish Pactos de Madrid de 1953 ) - a series of three agreements between the United States and Franco-Spanish , signed on September 26, 1953 in Madrid the palace of Santa Cruz . Included the following agreements:

The pact was concluded for a period of 10 years with an automatic extension for another two terms, 5 years each, unless the parties declare in advance their desire to denounce it. Under the Defense Agreement, the United States received the right to "expand, build and use military airfields and naval bases in Spain", as well as to create "structures of a secret nature." It also provided for the supply of US military materials to Spain. Under the Economic Aid Agreement, the Spanish government pledged to provide a number of benefits and privileges to American capital. The agreement on mutual defense assistance by the Spanish government pledged to finance "the expansion and maintenance of shared military bases by allocating part of the equivalent fund in pesetas resulting from American assistance."
The agreements were extended for 5 years in September 1963 . The United States was allowed to use the Rota port to park nuclear submarines and store nuclear warheads for Polaris missiles.
In 1969 , after lengthy negotiations, the agreements were extended until September 26, 1970 .
The final termination of the agreements occurred in 1989 .
