Crater Meran ( lat. Mairan ) is a large impact crater in the area of the northeast coast of Ocean of Storms on the visible side of the Moon . The name was given in honor of the French geophysicist , astronomer and chronobiologist Jean d' Ort de Mérand (1678-1771) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1935. The formation of the crater belongs to the Late Imbrian period [1] .

Crater Description
The crater's closest neighbors are the crater Louvil in the northwest; Sharp crater in the north-northeast and Gruituisen crater in the south-southeast. To the east of Meran Crater are the Jura Mountains and, behind them, the Rainbow Bay ; in the south-southeast - the peak of Gruituisen-Gamma ; in the south-southwest - the furrow of Meran [2] . The selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater are , diameter 39.5 km [3] , depth 2670 m [4] .
Crater Meran has a polygonal shape and is almost not destroyed. Shaft with a clearly defined sharp edge, the inner slope of the terrace-like structure. The height of the shaft above the surrounding terrain reaches 1030 m [1] , the volume of the crater is approximately 1200 km ³ [1] . The bottom of the bowl is relatively even, except for the crossed eastern part.
To the west of the crater Meran is the satellite crater Meran T - supposedly a crater atop the shield volcano [5] .
