Krae, Peter Joseph

Born April 8, 1758 in Mannheim in the family of the artist Lambert Krae .

In 1775 he became a student at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts , which was created by his father. At the age of twenty-two, Peter Joseph became the youngest professor in the academy. Thanks to the grant of Elector Carl Theodore , in 1782 he spent the school year in Rome , returning from where, he decided to become an architect.

In 1785-1786, he was again in Italy, where he became an honorary professor at the Florence Academy of Arts . In 1790, Krae was appointed director of the city Planning Council in 1790, but this post was abolished in 1795, when the region was occupied by the French army. He then applied for the position of court architect in Hanover , but this area was also occupied by French troops. As a result, he was forced to work in casual jobs, having resigned in 1837.

He died on October 7, 1840 in Braunschweig and was buried in the city Catholic cemetery. In 1972, he was reburied at the Magnifriedhof cemetery, where many great people rest. His son, Frederick Maria Krae (1804-1888), also became an architect.

In recognition of the merits of Peter Joseph Krae, a prize in his name was established in Braunschweig, which was awarded twelve times between 1954 and 2009. ^{[1] [2]}
