The administrative center is the city of Zalingei . It borders North Darfur in the north, West Darfur and Chad in the west, South Darfur in the east, and the Central African Republic in the south. Central Darfur is part of the Darfur conflict .
The province was created in January 2012 by separating the districts of Zallingi , Jebel Marra , Wadi Salih , Mukjar from the provinces of West Darfur , as well as the districts of Kas , Edd al-Fursan and Rehed al-Birdi from the province of South Darfur .
