Educated in the United States , where she graduated from high school. At the University of Innsbruck in 1983, she received a master's degree in translations from English and Spanish . She worked as a social worker, coordinator of a women's organization, editor of the newspaper Südwind , taught German courses for refugees .
In 1999, she was elected a nationalist from the Green Party , and was re-elected three times (2002, 2006, 2008). He is the first open lesbian elected to the Austrian parliament. In the framework of the parliamentary faction of the Greens, she was responsible for foreign and development policies, LGBT equality issues. In 2006-2009, she worked as co-chair of the European Green Party (along with Philip Lamberts ).
