Story

The events of Republic Commando begin on the planet Kamino, where special commandone clones were grown under the callsign "Delta", where they undergo special training. After that, they are sent to the first combat mission on the planet Geonosis.

The first operation of the Delta squad was the murder of one of the separatist leaders of the trade union San Fak during the Battle of Geonosis (which ended the Star Wars movie : Attack of the Clones ). Fighters "Delta" successfully cope with the task. After that, the fighters of the Delta squad needed to find control codes and destroy one of the giant spherical ships. On the way there, the clones destroyed the anti-air bunker. For greater success and more extensive destruction, Delta detachment was ordered to separate. Separately, they caused more damage to the ship. And after downloading the launch codes of the entire fleet of the Confederation of independent Delta systems, they fled from the exploding ship.

The second stage of the campaign begins about a year after winning Geonosis. The Delta detachment was sent to the survey of the Prosecutor ship (Executor, the Contractor) with which communication was lost. The task for the detachment was to collect flight data from the ship. Faced with trandoshanskim mercenaries and KNS combat droids, the clones prevented them from hijacking the ship. KNS attacked him. The detachment was able to open an automated fire on the enemy cruiser. Later, the Republic ship came under the command of Captain Talbot, and together they destroyed the separatists.

In the final stages of the war (approximately 2 years after the events on Geonosis), the Delta detachment was sent to Kashyik to rescue the commander Wuki Tarfula. After freeing Tarfula and other Wookiees from the captivity of trandoscans, the clones clashed with the magna-guards of General Grievous , sent to kill them. After the rescue, the Boss received an order to blow up the bridge held by the separatists. Subsequently, the Delta with the help of rocket launchers destroyed the enemy cruiser, who tried to change the course of the battle for Kashyik, and the separatists retreated. Unfortunately the sniper of Detachment Zero-seven went missing in battle with the droids. Despite the loss, the clones went to connect with the invading forces of the Republic.

The game ends with a final roll aboard a starship. Delta squad is experiencing the loss of a friend. They receive a message from Master Yoda about the new task.

Delta Squad

The squad includes four commandos, the identity of each of which is different from the others:

  • RC-1138 (Delta Three-Eight) nicknamed "Boss" - Boss
  • RC-1140 (Delta Four-Zero) nicknamed "Fixer" (Fixer) - Burglar
  • RC-1207 (Delta Zero-Seven) nicknamed "Sev" (Sev) - Seventh
  • RC-1262 (Delta Six-Two) named Scorch - Fuse

The player takes the role of the Boss, who is the commander of the squad and gives orders to others. The player will perform a variety of missions, the main goal - sabotage separatist enterprises. Each team member has his own skills and in the game are used for different purposes.

Production

The sounds for the game were recorded at the Skywalker Sound studio by sound engineer Jena Vance ( Eng. Jana Vance ), who worked on the soundtrack for the films “ Save Private Ryan ”, “ Star Wars. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith "and" Black Hole . " [one]

Unlike most Star Wars-based games, Republic Commando uses the music of John Williams only partially. Especially for the game, composer Jesse Harlin wrote several choral tracks in Mandalorian language [2] .

Novelization

Immediately after the release of the game, the book Star Wars Republic Commando: Hard Contact , written by military journalist Karen Trayviss , was published . Later, the book had a sequel that told about the fate of colleagues “Delta Squad” - “Omega Squad”. A total of 6 books were published in the Republican Commandos series, the series ends with the novel Order 66. All books are translated into Russian.

Star Wars: Republic Commando received generally positive reviews, but with little criticism. Some authors praised the game for its pleasant and exciting experiences. Criticized mainly short single-player campaign and simple multiplayer mode. Republic Commando, the authors of the articles were compared with other games, such as: Halo , Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six , Call of Duty, and others, considering in them similar gameplay elements. [7] [12] [17]

GameRankings and Metacritic gave the game a score of 80.35% [3] and 78/100 [5] points for the Xbox version, and 79.11% [4] and 78/100 [6] points for the PC version.

Eurogamer Kristan Reed put the game 8 out of 10, praising the thoughtful tactical maneuvers implemented in Republic Commando; for high-quality and impressive audio-visual effects of the game, but criticized the mistakes in AI and the easy passage of the game without difficulties, as well as the lack of a joint campaign . [7]

Reviewer Bob Kolayko of GameSpot awarded the game 8.7 out of 10, appreciating the pleasant single-player campaign, the brilliant sound effects and the main design idea: the ability to manage the Delta team. The author called the drawbacks of the game a not quite fascinating multiplayer mode and a short single player. [12]

The author Dan Adams of IGN rated the game at 8.2 out of 10, arguing that the game has a colorful group of characters from 4 clones, and that this is a good realized idea, each of which has its own specific skills for completing assignments. The author pleasantly received a good voice acting, excellent animation and great artistic style in the game. Dan Adams criticized the unfinished ideas for the implementation of certain functions of AI and not quite developed gameplay , as well as not introducing new ideas to the implementation of multiplayer. [17]

The largest at the time, the Russian game portal Absolute Games put the game 63%. Observers have noted an excellent soundtrack and graphics. The disadvantages were attributed weak plot and gameplay. The verdict: “Heartless dullness like Republic Commando will sooner or later ruin the already diminishing Star Wars reputation.” See a box with multi-colored clones on the cover - pass by. It is time to beat the greedy LucasArts with a labor dollar. ” [21] .

The magazine “ Gambling ” put the game 8 points out of 10, stressing that “the main emotion that literally permeated the entire Republic Commando is disappointment. It's a shame that LucasArts couldn’t squeeze out the Hollywood blockbuster, who travels solely by his own vigor, preferring to plug game designers' mistakes with bright flashes of explosions, from the potentially brilliant idea of LucasArts . The high rating was justified by the fact that the game is “absolutely boorish blockbuster, brazenly hiding behind the bright name of Star Wars. With all this, it is played extremely vigorously and swiftly. There are no Jedi and the Force , but there are clones, wooks and many, many droids ” [20] .

In the UK , more than 60,000 copies of the Xbox version of Republic Commando were sold by the end of 2005. [22]
