The traditional spelling of the name of a scientist in Russian-language literature until the middle of the 20th century is Johann Gadolin.

Biography

 

Born on June 5, 1760 in the city of Abo, in the Grand Duchy of Finland, which was then part of the Kingdom of Sweden . He began to study mathematics at the Royal Academy of Abo , but found it too complicated and switched to the study of chemistry.

In 1779 he continued his studies at Uppsala University .

From 1790 to 1822 - professor at the Royal Academy of Abo . Corresponding Member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1811).

In 1794, examining a mineral found near Ytterby (Sweden), first called ytterbit, and subsequently gadolinite [1] , it discovered in it an previously unknown “earth”, called yttrium and turned out to be a mixture of rare earth oxides , one of which was called gadolinium .

Gadolin died on August 15, 1852 from heart failure .
