The genus Panorpa has 3 eyes on its head. The first segment of the breast is very small. The wings are almost the same, resting horizontally at rest, diverging at the rear ends. The abdomen is cone-shaped, pointed at the end in the female, in the male, the last three segments of the abdomen are bent upwards and the last strongly swollen and ends with a claw-shaped organ of copulation.
Skorpionnitsy eat insects, protect themselves from enemies by releasing an unpleasantly smelling liquid. Larvae live in the earth, eating decaying substances. On the head there are short antennae, two eyes and strongly developed oral organs, the segments of the body are rather thick, convex, equipped with warts that carry hairs, on the first three segments there are horny chest legs, on the next - 8 pairs of fleshy small abdominal legs, on the 1st segment and on segments 4 through 11 there are a pair of spiracles. The general view of the larva is similar to butterfly caterpillars. Pupation occurs in a cavity in the ground.
