The Jesuits arrived in Macau in 1558 , and already in 1560 a wooden temple was built on the site of the modern church. In 1618 the church was rebuilt, but from clay and soil . The building that has survived to this day was built of stone in 1801 - 1803 . In the XIX century, the temple continued to be completed in the neoclassical style with Baroque elements, acquiring a modern look in 1846 [1] . Thus, the St. Lawrence Temple is considered one of the oldest churches in Macau [2] .
The church is located in southern Macau, part of the Historic Center of Macau , a World Heritage Site . The church is surrounded by a garden surrounded by a stone fence . The temple itself has the shape of a Latin cross measuring 37 m by 29 m with two internal chapels [3] . The interior is richly decorated with decorative columns . The main nave has an altar depicting St. Lawrence, with clothing stripes. Some church windows have stained glass windows with scenes from the life of the martyr , as well as Our Lady and St. Lucia .
The Church of St. Lawrence is the main church of the eponymous parish , one of six in the diocese of Macau .
The Church of St. Lawrence, operating, is one of the stops of the annual Holy Procession .
