Thirty-three Orientales

Thirty-three Orientales ( Spanish: Treinta y Tres Orientales , literally. Thirty-three from the Eastern Band ) is a group of rebels whose actions eventually led to the formation of an independent state of Uruguay .

Background

In 1810, as a result of the May Revolution, the Viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata declared independence, becoming the state of the United Provinces of South America . In 1813, the Eastern Province was formed on the territory of the Eastern Strip with the administrative center in Montevideo . In 1817, the Eastern Province was occupied by the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarve . On July 18, 1821, the eastern strip was officially annexed by Brazil and was called Sisplatin ; while the northern parts of the eastern strip were annexed to other Brazilian states.

Event

After the Brazilians won, the defeated head of the Eastern province, Jose Gervasio Artigas , retired in 1820 to exile in Paraguay . One of his former associates, Juan Antonio Lavalleja , arrived in Buenos Aires in 1823, and began to form an expedition to expel Brazilians from the Eastern Band and reunite the Eastern Province with the United Provinces of South America. He was supported by large local farmers, led by Juan Manuel de Rosas .

Moving inland and raising the people along the way against the Brazilian government, they arrived in Montevideo on May 20, 1825.

On June 14, 1825, the Florida Congress gathered in the town of Florida , which on August 25 proclaimed the independence of the Eastern Province from Brazil and its incorporation into the United Provinces of South America. In response, December 10, Brazil declared war on the United Provinces. Thus began the Argentine-Brazilian war , the result of which was the formation of an independent Uruguay.
