General Information

  • Five tennis players who won it earlier took part in the tournament: three-time champion Gustavo Cuerten (1997, 2000, 2001), Carlos Moya (1998), Andre Agassi (1999), Albert Costa (2002) and current winner Juan Carlos Ferrero (2003).
  • The first racket of the world, the current winner of two Grand Slam tournaments and the Final tournament, Roger Federer in the third round lost to three-time winner Roland Garros Gustavo Kuertenu with a score of 4-6, 4-6, 4-6. After that Federer 36 times in a row at the Grand Slam tournaments will reach at least the quarter-finals. The series will be interrupted at the Wimbledon tournament 2013 by a defeat in the second round from Sergei Stakhovsky .
  • In the final, Gaudio won back from the score 0-2 in sets. He also became the first tennis player in the Open Era who managed to win the French Open championship final, having received the “steering wheel” (that is, losing one of the sets with a score of 0-6).
  • Gaudio became an inactive champion. Before the tournament, he occupied only the 44th line in the ranking.
  • Tennis players played in the semi-finals, who had never previously won Grand Slam tournaments
  • Gaudio was the last tennis player to win Roland Garros before the Nadal era: from 2005 to 2019, Rafael Nadal won 12 of the 15 titles, and his balance of wins and losses in this tournament is 93-2
  • The first round match between Fabrice Santoro and Arno Clement lasted 6 hours and 33 minutes and was the longest since the beginning of the Open Era in 1968. The record was surpassed in 2010 at Wimbledon in a match between John Isner and Nicolas May
