Cataclysm uses the same game engine as the original, and, in general, is a full game with the same components - a strategic three-dimensional battle - with some additions to the original interface.

When the game became available on GOG.com , the name was changed to "Homeworld: Emergence", since by then Cataclysm was already a trademark of Blizzard Entertainment .

Major changes

The ability to speed up the game time by 8 times was added. Technologies that improve ships and give them special abilities have also become possible. The command ship and carriers can build external modules to research and maintain a larger fleet. Fuel was completely deleted from the game (due to new types of ultra-efficient engines consuming very little fuel).

Unlike the original, the player’s command ship can not only attack but also move slowly. The Command ship has a fairly powerful weapon, while the original Mother ship was virtually defenseless. In the future, it is possible to add a gigantic plasma gun to the Command ship, which is able to smash the enemy fleet from a long distance.

Story

Cataclysm states that the "good" race is Kushan, and the "bad" race is Taidan. The action takes place 15 years after the return of Kushans to their homeworld - Hiigaru. Since then, the ethnonym "Kushan" has not been used, - instead, the ethnonym "Hiigari", "Hiigarts" is used. Instead of playing for Hiigaryan, the player has to take command of one of the Command ships of a small ore-mining kyit - Somtau clan called Kuun-Lan (Purifying Flame) of the Explorer class.

The game begins in deep space, where Kuun Lan produces ore. After receiving a signal of help from Hiigara, the ship returns home to help repel the attack of the Taidan imperialists seeking to recreate their empire. After the battle, the Command Ship is given the task of finding and repairing the lost destroyer Bushan-Re. A strange lighthouse is found in the same area. To investigate the Kuun-Lana lighthouse, it is required to find and release the Somtau research ship Kli-San (Seeking the Truth) from the Turan Raiders minefield. Kli-San docked to the Command Ship and begins to study the lighthouse. During this process, something begins to capture the lower decks of the Kuun Lana — where the lighthouse is. Navy command has no choice but to drop the lower decks to save the ship. The Kli-San, accompanied by the fighters, flies to the abandoned lower decks to continue scanning, but an energetic ray bursts from the discarded part, which turns the Kli-San and the fighters into something covered with red spots. A fleet of Turan Raiders appears, but it is also captured by an unknown force.

Having barely escaped the battle with this new enemy, called the "Beast" or "The Critter," the Kuun Lan flies to the nearest Bentusi merchant ship to ask them about it. The command ship arrives too late - the Bentushi ship has already been attacked by the Creature fleet. With the help of the arriving Kaal-Sto carrier, the Somtau forces are helping Bentusi repulse the attack. During the battle, the Creature tries to capture the Bentushi ship, but the Bentusi blow up their ship instead of becoming part of the Creature.

Further studies of the nature of the Creature discovered that about a million years ago, someone’s experimental ship “picked up” the Creature when flying in hyperspace. The creature captured the ship - "Naggarok" - but the crew was able to damage the ship’s engines in time. An automatic lighthouse was launched with part of the Creature in it.

Upon learning that the Imperialists - the Taidan troops - who have not joined the Taidan Republic, are trying to create biological weapons based on the Creature, Kuun-Lan attacks their research base and destroys it. Hiding in a garbage cloud, Kuun Lan finds the ancient Siege Cannon and attaches it to the ship. Since the cannon in its current state does not harm the main ship of the Creature, the Kuun-Lana crew decides to find the Naggarok and obtain a sample of the original Creature. For this, Kuun-Lan finds another Command ship of the same class - Faal-Corum (The Quiet Wanderer).

The Faal Corum is also attacked by the Creature fleet. Having recaptured the creature’s strength and destroying one of its carriers with the help of Kuun-Lan, Faal-Korum transfers its astronautical command to Kuun-Lan. This team discovers the region where the Naggarok should be located, but this territory is too large to search. Kuun Lan is heading to the base of the Turan Raiders in order to get their more accurate star maps for discovering an ancient ship. After a short battle, the base gives Kuun Lana access to their systems.

On the way to the Naggarok, a Turan saboteur on board damages the Kuun Lana hyper-engine, throwing a fleet in the middle of a Taidan ambush. With the help of the arrived Faal-Korum, Somtau repulsed the enemy’s attack. Kuun Lan continues its journey.

"Naggarok" is discovered, - it is being repaired by the Imperialists. They try to convince the Somtau of the threat of the Creature, but the Creature, it turns out, promised them half a galaxy in return for their help. The Somtau ships enter the battle with the ships of the Imperialists and the Creature and successfully take a sample of the Creature culture from the Naggarok. Having caught the fleeing ship of the Imperialists, Somtau finds out that they are trying to capture the Republican shipyard, where they are developing a new weapon called the Moon-Nomad.

Having finalized the siege cannon and using the Beast culture, Kuun-Lan is looking for the Bentushi merchant fleet to request assistance in the operation with the gun. Upon arrival, they learn that Bentusi make a massive exodus from the galaxy by means of huge hyper-gates. Having destroyed the gates and calmed the angry Bentushi, Kuun-Lan receives their help in working with the cannon. The Somtau fleet then meets with the combat unit of the kite Manaan, which tells them the location of Kli-Sana. Since this ship was the first to be infected, Somtau hopes the Beast has a strong connection with him to serve as bait for the creature's flagship.

After a long battle, Kuun-Lan shoots Kli-Sana from a siege cannon and renders it harmless. Before exploding, Kli-San sends a distress signal to the flagship, which is directly ambushed by Somtau and dies from the same siege gun. After making sure that the weapons are working, the Kuun-Lana fleet goes to the Republican shipyard to stop the Naggarok.

Upon arrival, Somtau sees that the “Moon-Nomad” is already in the hands of the Creature and guards the “Naggarok”. The creature on the Naggarok offers Somtau an alliance in return for their help. In response, the Hiyagans engage in battle with the Creature’s ships.

Here the creature shows the full power of the Naggarok - the ship begins to move around the battlefield with incredible speed. After tracking the ship, Somtau researchers found that the Naggarok was equipped with an inertia-free engine. The ship travels across the battlefield, stopping to "eat" the ships of the Imperialists and Somtau. Realizing that they were betrayed, the Imperialists are retreating, leaving the Creature fleet in the minority. Somtau begin to use an electromagnetic pulse to “brake” a little “Naggarok”. Then the merchant ship Bentushi arrives and transfers the blueprints of their ion fighters to Kuun Lana. Using this gift, Somtau is finally destroying the ancient Naggarok.

The final video shows that, after a long sweep, the Beast was completely destroyed in the galaxy. For their merits, Somtau was awarded with all honors. Since then, their kiit has become known as the Creators.
