Large flies with a length of 10 to 39 mm ( Laphria lata ). Proboscis long, 3rd segment of antennae long, abdomen long, thick, expanding posteriorly in females. Like all Kapyr Lafrias lead a predatory lifestyle, attacking various insects. Waiting for prey, they usually sit on tree trunks and stumps. Many species are similar to bumblebees and wasps.

In Europe, the most abundant is yellow catfish ( Laphria flava ), black in color with reddish-yellow hairs on the upper side of the chest and abdomen, 18–20 mm long.
