Biography

Like his predecessors, Matthias was a staunch supporter of the German kings and emperors. He was married to the sister of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa Berthe, and the wife of Frederick Barbarossa Beatrice himself was Mattias niece. Matthias, along with Conrad III, took part in the Second Crusade , accompanied Frederick Barbarossa in his Italian campaigns and supported Adrian IV and Alexander III , France and Sicily in the struggle against the Roman popes.

Matthias was at enmity with many of his vassals and neighbors, including the Counts of Bar and the Bishops of Thule . The clash with Bishop Tule for possessing Gonderville on the Moselle led to the excommunication of Matthias from the church by decision of Pope Eugene III ( 1153 ). However, with the support of Frederick Barbarossa, he defeated the bishop and became known as the Count of Thule.

Matthias generously patronized the church and founded a number of monasteries, in one of which Klerle was buried with his wife.
