History

Brazil and Uruguay are located in South America and maintain close political, economic and cultural ties. A feature of bilateral relations between the countries is a strong historical connection: in 1680, the Portuguese founded the Colonia del Sacramento , in 1817 the Eastern province was occupied by the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarve . On July 18, 1821, the eastern strip was officially annexed by Brazil and was called Sisplatin ; while the northern parts of the eastern strip were annexed to other Brazilian states. In 1822, Brazil became an independent state. In August 1825, Thirty-three Orientales revolted in Sisplatin, leading to the Argentine-Brazilian war . In 1828, an independent state of Uruguay was formed in accordance with the treaty in Montevideo in the southern part of the Eastern Band. Countries on one side took part in the following wars: the civil war in Uruguay (1839–1851) and the Paraguay war (1864–1870) [2] .

Bilateral relations at the end of the 19th and the end of the 20th century were overshadowed by internal turmoil, which led to cooling between the countries. Asuncion was signed in 1991, Brazil and Uruguay decided to maintain closer political, economic and cultural ties. Today, the Brazilian government calls Uruguay its strategic ally and considers bilateral relations with this country one of the priorities in its foreign policy . Uruguay supports the desire of Brazil to take a permanent seat on the UN Security Council [3] .
