Biography

Alexander Villouin was born March 12, 1808 in the capital of the Russian Empire, the city of St. Petersburg, in the family of a French emigrant [1] . He studied music with Franz Xaver Goebel and John Field [c 1] .

Anton Grigorievich Rubinstein considered Villouin his friend and second father. A. G. Rubinstein made his first artistic steps under his direct supervision when Villouin accompanied him abroad [2] . Anton Rubinstein left such a flattering review of Villouin in his memoirs, which were published in Russian Antiquity (1889, No. 11) [3] .

Petersburg Conservatory

In the 1860s, Alexander Ivanovich Villuan taught piano at the St. Petersburg Conservatory (now the St. Petersburg State Conservatory named after N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov ) [4] . At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, the music critic Nikolai Feopemptovich Solovyov wrote about Villouin in the pages of the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary : “He was a wonderful connoisseur of piano technique ” [3] . However, according to the Musical Dictionary by Hugo Riemann , Villouin himself was not a virtuoso performer, and in order to help him be elected to the professors of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, Anton Rubinstein played the piano during the exam for his teacher in order to demonstrate the pedagogical gift of his mentor [5] . In addition, Villouin gave violin lessons [4] .

Among the students of Villouin were also Carl Zike [6] and Anna Esipova , who in 1892 took the place of a piano professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and raised a galaxy of great musicians [7] .

A.I. Villouin outlined his teaching method in a textbook entitled: “The School for the Piano,” published in 1863 and accepted by the St. Petersburg Conservatory for guidance. Her epigraph read: " Faites l'impossible pour arriver au possible ." His work was repeatedly reprinted and translated into German [1] and French (École pratique du piano, Paris, Heugel) languages [3] .

Of the musical works written by A.I. Villouin, the most famous are a large concert for violin and orchestra, two concerts for piano and orchestra and two overtures. Most of the works of Villouin were not published during the life of the composer [8] .

Alexander Ivanovich Villuan died in poverty on September 2, 1878 in his hometown [4] . He was buried in the Tikhvin cemetery .
