The team finished the season in 2nd place, which allowed it to play in test matches for reaching the top division . Newton Heat beat Burnley at Bank Street , but could not beat Sunderland , and remained in the Second Division. In the FA Cup, the “ Gentiles ” made it to the third round, in which they lost to Derby County .
Newton Heat also played in the Lancashire Grand Cup , from which it dropped out after the second round, losing to Burnley 2-1. In the Manchester Grand Cup, the “ pagans ” beat Manchester City in the third round, but lost to the Bury club in the semifinals.
