Biography

Born in the family of pastor Johann Abraham Immer. He worked as a bookbinder, since 1834 he studied theology in Bern, Berlin and Bonn [2] . Since 1839 (with an interruption to study in Berlin), he served as a parish priest in Burgdorf . In 1845, he married Julia Kinast, a teacher in the Bernese school for girls since 1828 [3] and chairman of the Association of Protestant Evangelicals Bern, and in the same year he received the position of a priest in Buren-on-Are [2] .

Since 1850, Immer is an extraordinary professor of dogma and the New Testament at the University of Bern (in 1852-1853 he was rector [2] , from 1856 to 1881 he was a full professor [4] ). Honorary Doctor of Theology, University of Basel , Honorary Doctor of Philosophy, University of Bern [2] .

Immer as a theologian was a supporter of the liberal theological school of Schleiermacher and Lutz , in the framework of which an attempt is made to reconcile piety and freedom of knowledge. Adhering to more traditional views, opponents have repeatedly accused Immer and the Department of Theology at the University of Berne as a whole of heterodoxia (deviation from the tenets of the faith) [2] .
