Aurorina rock is located in the western part of the Southern coast of Crimea, on Cape Ai-Todor and is its eastern steep spur. The name of the rock was given by Russians in the 19th century in honor of the Roman goddess of the morning dawn - Aurora .
Aurorina Skala is an Yailinsky rejector and belongs to the Massandra Formation - a geological structure formed as a result of the sharp rise of the Main Ridge of the Crimean Mountains and the sliding of its individual parts to the sea. [2] The rock is composed of limestone of the Upper Jurassic period of the Mesozoic era .
A wooden structure was built on the rock at the end of the 19th century, which became the forerunner of the Swallow's Nest palace built here in 1912. In 1927, part of the rock was destroyed by the Yalta earthquake . Then, a crack formed in the rock under the castle, which was closed in the 1960s during the reconstruction of the palace.
In the rock there are several karst grotto caves, up to 30 m long. Stalactites are found on the cave walls. One of these grottoes was used to shoot the ichthyander den in the movie Amphibian Man . Also on the rock was part of the filming of the film “ Ten Little Indians ”.
Aurorina rock fell into many paintings, including the work of Aivazovsky , Lagorio and Bogolyubov . The rock along with the palace is also depicted on the flag and coat of arms of Gaspra, a number of commemorative coins of Ukraine and Russia.
