The Maan massacre is an episode of the armed conflict in Syria on February 9, 2014, during which militants of radical Islamist groups massacred the civilian population of the village of Maan , populated mainly by Alawites - co-religionists of President Bashar al-Assad [1] . According to various sources, 21–62 people became victims of Islamists, mainly women and children [2] [3] .

Event
Maan is a small village located in the vicinity of Hama. Most of its villagers are Muslim Alawites . Through the Maan passes the highway connecting Damascus with the northern provinces of Syria. On February 9, 2014, militants from the Islamic Front Islamic group launched an armed attack on the village. During the battle, 25 local Alawite militias died [2] [3] , and after the assault the Islamists massacred its inhabitants, the victims of which were mostly old people, women and children [4] .
In the massacre of civilians, the Syrian authorities accused the militants of the Islamic Front , supported by Saudi Arabia [5] [6] [7] . Syrian state television reported that at least 60 civilians were killed by Islamists during the massacre. Sources in the Syrian opposition reported only 20 killed [8] .
On February 17, 2014, government forces knocked out the Islamists and regained control of the village [8] .
