Biography

His father, Voin Chirkovich, was a prominent merchant, chairman of the Pirot municipality and MP, radical and participant in the Timok uprising , and his mother Anastasia was the sister of a famous banker, politician and minister, Kosta Taushanovich . April 8, 1884, two and a half months after the birth of Vladimir, his mother dies, who was then only 24 years old. Kosta Taushanovich adopts him, which is why Vladimir bore the name Taushanovich until the end of his life. The baptism took place in Belgrade, and Nikola Pasic personally became the godfather [1] .

He graduated from elementary school and a six-digit gymnasium in Belgrade. In 1902-1907 he studied at the Chisinau Theological Seminary and the theological faculty of the University of Athens, where in 1912 he defended his doctoral dissertation "Apostle Paul in Athens" [1] .

On May 11, 1913 in the Rakovitsa Monastery, Archimandrite Reuben was tonsured a monk with the name Benjamin , on May 14, Bishop Nisi Dosifey (Vasic) in the Belgrade Cathedral Church was ordained to the rank of Hierodeacon , and there on May 21, Metropolitan Dimitry (Pavlovich) 1] .

December 15, 1913 appointed teacher at the Belgrade Theological Seminary . March 15, 1914 appointed teacher of the gymnasium of the city of Gevgeliya . He taught in Serbian gymnasiums on the island of Corfu and in the city of Veles . After the prescribed professor’s exam, he served in Gevgeliya and Ohriye [1] .

He worked as a nurse in the hospitals of the Society of Serbian Sisters in Belgrade and Léger .

In 1919, Bishop of Velesko-Debarski Barnabas (Rosic) was awarded the title of Sincella , then Protosinkella [1] .

On December 15, 1920, he was elevated to the rank of Archimandrite by Bishop Rashsky-Prizrensky Michael (Shilyak) [1] .

December 6, 1925 by the decision of the Council of Bishops was elected bishop of Bihac .

May 23, 1926 in the Belgrade Cathedral Church consecrated bishop of Bihac. The consecration was performed by: the Patriarch of Serbia Dimitri, Metropolitan Banyaluksky Vasily (Popovich) and the Bishop of Rash-Prizrensky Mikhail (Shilyak) .

October 29, 1928 transferred to the Zletovsky-Strumich diocese [2] .

In June 1934 he was transferred to the Branichev Diocese . On October 7 of that year, he was consecrated [1] .

During his ministry, 19 churches were built and 13 more were laid, and 37 new parish houses were built. On his initiative, the diocesan union of Christian communities was founded. He founded the newspaper "Svyatosavsky Way" [3] .

Bishop Benjamin supported the pilgrimage movement , which educated peasants in distant mountainous regions.

During the Second World War, he accepted about 40 exiled priests into the diocese, and opened shelters for homeless children in the monasteries of Ravanitsa and St. Petka [4] .

In 1948 he was a member of the delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church in Moscow at celebrations dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the Russian Orthodox Church autocephaly .

He died on May 28, 1952 in Belgrade. He was buried in the cathedral church in the city of Pozharevac .
