Ivan Shabyan ( Croatian Ivan Šabjan ; November 21, 1961 ) was a Yugoslav and Croatian canoeist rower , playing for the national teams of Yugoslavia and Croatia in the second half of the 1980s and the mid-1990s. The participant of two summer Olympic games, the world champion, the winner of many regattas of republican and international importance.

Biography
Ivan Shabyan was born on November 21, 1961.
He achieved his first serious success at an adult international level in 1986 when he joined the main team of the Yugoslav national team and visited the World Championships in Canadian Montreal, from where he brought awards of bronze and silver dignity won in the standings of single canoes at 1000 and 10000 meters respectively. A year later, he performed at the world championship in German Duisburg, where he overcame all his rivals in ten kilometers distance and thus won the gold medal. For this outstanding achievement was recognized as the best athlete in 1987 in Croatia.
Thanks to a series of successful performances, Shabian was granted the right to defend the country's honor at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul - he reached the final stage of the semifinals only at five hundred meters, while at a thousand meters he managed to reach the final, but in the decisive round he finished only eighth.
After the collapse of Yugoslavia, Ivan Shabyan began to play for the Croatian national team and continued to take part in major international regattas. So, being among the leaders of the Croatian rowing team, he successfully qualified for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , where he started in three disciplines: in one thousand meters, he finished eighth, in twos with team-mate Drazen Futak, he stopped at the semifinals stage. half a kilometer and kilometer distances. Soon after the end of this Olympiad, he decided to end his career as a professional athlete, giving way to the team of young Croatian rowers.
