About the album
Joe Elliot from Def Leppard (who previously produced Warwick's solo albums and also worked with Gorem on the Thin Lizzy catalog) wanted to be the album's producer, but by August 2014 he had dropped out of the project due to his employment at Def Leppard. [5] In June 2014, Marco Mendoza was replaced by Robbie Crane for bass. [6] Guitarist Damon Johnson noted the work of album producer Nick Raskalenix : “He carefully went through all the songs with the band and made sure that we are focused enough on the material to best present Black Star Riders in 2015.” [7]
Warwick commented on the title of the album: “Life is dishonest. It was not and never will be. Sometimes you have to live with the killer instinct just to survive in the pursuit of happiness. Nobody will do for you what you yourself should do for yourself. ” [7]
Classic Rock reviewer rated the album at 9 out of 10 stars, noting the literate presence of “ghosts of the past”, the spectacular guitar work of Goreham and Johnson, the brilliant work of Rascalenix, and considered that the band “began to write their own story” at The Killer Instinct : [1]
| It’s impossible to listen to the Celtic melodies of the magnificent “Soldierstown” without recalling “Black Rose”, “Emerald” and the late Gary Moore , or the expressive lines of Ricky Warwick in the title track, without feeling Lynot’s guiding hand - but the prevailing impression is that the group acquired a new face. <..> The album would have sounded beautifully from the jukbox in the coolest pub in the city, and BSR at the same time seriously declare themselves to be one of the most energetic and viable teams of classical rock. |
