Mohd. Asraf bin Haji Abdul Wahab ( Malaysian. Mohd Asraf bin Hj. Abd. Wahab ) ( June 11, 1927 , Asam Java, Kuala Selangor, Selangor - November 6, 1999 , Kuala Lumpur ) - Malaysian journalist, writer, literary critic, translator , compiler of dictionaries and textbooks in the Malay language , one of the founders of the Pentecostal Generation movement. Better known as Asraf.

Short Biography

He graduated from a primary Malay school in Asam Java (1937), then a secondary school in Kuala Lumpur and the Victoria Institute in Singapore (1949). Until 1957, he worked as a journalist for the Utusan Melayu newspaper in Singapore, and subsequently was editor, editor-in-chief and director of Oxford University Press in Kuala Lumpur. In the years 1973-1977. He worked as a consultant, editorial director and executive director of the McGrog Hill Far Eastern Publishing House. In 1977, he created his own publishing house, Analekta. He also taught Malay at the National University of Malaysia and Tunku Abdul Rahman College. Secretary of the Third Congress of Malay Language and Literature (1956), member of the Malay Language Committee of Singapore [1] .

Creative activity

Along with writing poetry, translations (the Golden Pen series) and literary criticism, he paid much attention (especially since the 1970s) to the development of the Malay language [2] . He was one of the initiators of the creation of a single improved spelling of the Malay and Indonesian languages, adopted in 1971 [3] , took part in the development of a standard pronunciation of the Malay language (1980s), the author of several textbooks and dictionaries of the Malay language. Concerned about the future of the Malay language, he spoke in 1996 with the so-called cultural manifesto: “The language will die - the nation will die” [4] . In critical articles, he highlighted the social significance of literature, emphasized its educational functions, its role as a tribune of social justice.
